de Kooning Residence
A four bedroom, three bath West Village apartment with ample natural light and two terraces was compromised by an awkward floor plan and low ceilings. After a gut renovation, the reconfigured circulation creates an intuitive flow between a long entry hall art gallery, the living area and the bedrooms, while lighting coves expand horizontal and vertical volumes.
The warm horizontal plane of ebony flooring flows into kitchen cabinets in hand-cut walnut veneer from the South of France, creating structural character and a nexus for the open plan kitchen/dining/living area. A series of sliding panels allows separation between public and private spaces, as well as the possibility to join or partition two of the four bedrooms.
