DeKooning Residence
Before the DeKooning Residence renovation, this West Village apartment boasted ample light and multiple terraces, but was hampered by an awkward floor plan and low ceilings. Ghiora Aharoni Design Studio responded this challenge by creating an open floor plan that rationalized circulation in the DeKooning apartment with three separate activity zones, each of which has public and private systems of access. The narrow galley kitchen now opens to the living and dining areas, and its striking cabinets of custom hand-cut walnut veneer from the South of France are both practical and an architectural statement, the warm heart of the apartment. Ghiora Aharoni Design Studio also devised a system of cove lighting that made a design asset in the portions of the apartment with low ceilings.
